Consumers Choice Health Plan South Carolina – News & Press:
Insurance newcomer making an impact in SC
COLUMBIA, SC — With a month to go in the first year of the federal Health Insurance Marketplace, it appears Consumers’ Choice Health Plan, a newcomer to South Carolina, has made an immediate impact.
SEATTLE, Feb. 18, 2014 /NEWS.GNOM.ES/ – Two new health plan CO-OPs established under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) have selected clinical guidelines from MCG to help drive effective care for their members. MCG (formerly Milliman Care Guidelines, now part of the Hearst Health network) is a leading provider of healthcare guidance to payor and provider markets.
“As a member-driven, non-profit organization we’re focused on assuring our members receive high-value, patient-centered healthcare,” said Dr. Jerry Reeves, Chief Health Officer for Community Health Alliance. “MCG helps us do that by providing comprehensive, up-to-date, and thoroughly researched health decision support derived from the medical literature. That means our members are more likely to receive care that’s proven effective.”
Consumers’ Choice Health based in South Carolina and Community Health Alliance based in Tennessee began providing coverage effective January 1, 2014. Open enrollment continues until March 31. Created under the ACA Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan (CO-OP) Program, the new health plans offer health insurance in the retail market, with a special focus on the region’s uninsured population – nearly 1.6 million in the two states combined.
Consumers’ Choice Health Plan set to be the lowest cost option for South Carolinians
South Carolina’s only health insurance CO-OP, Consumers’ Choice Health Plan, will again offer competitive rates during the second nationwide open enrollment period which begins Saturday, November 15. Initial analyses show it to be the lowest health care coverage option in most of the state’s rating areas. Also, current members will see only a slight increase in their renewal rates, some will even see decreases.
Much of the Consumers’ Choice membership is made up of individual and family plans offered under the ACA (Affordable Care Act). The CO-OP also offers plans for small businesses through its ACA platform and in the private market.
“We’ve worked very hard to stay true to our mission of offering high-quality, affordable coverage and I’m proud of what our team has been able to accomplish,” said President and CEO Jerry Burgess . As the most affordable in most areas of South Carolina, shoppers will be able to get the coverage they need for themselves and their families with an substantial provider network to support that,” he added.
Consumers’ Choice Health Plan has the majority of hospital networks across the state and a team that remains committed to growing the provider network for its members.
Health Care Signups Continue
February 3, 2014 – The Augusta Chronicle
The majority of South Carolinians who picked a health care plan last month through the federal marketplace passed over the state’s long-standing insurance leader in favor of a new start-up insurance cooperative.
Data provided by Consumer’s Choice Health Plan shows it sold 65 percent of all plans purchased through the federal marketplace in South Carolina in October. BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, which dominates the insurance industry in this state, has not released any specific enrollment data. Read More and the Post and Courier
Consumers’ Choice Health Plan Earns NCQA Interim Accreditation
October 22, 2013
Consumers’ Choice Health Plan, South Carolina’s health insurance CO-OP (Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan), has been awarded Interim Accreditation by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Review Oversight Committee.
NCQA Health Plan Accreditation is a voluntary review process. It evaluates how well a health plan manages all parts of its organization and delivery system — physicians, hospitals, other providers and administrative services — to continuously improve the quality of care and services available to its members. NCQA Health Plan Accreditation surveys include rigorous on-site and off-site evaluations of over 60 standards and selected HEDIS® (Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set) measures. A team of physicians and health plan experts conducts accreditation surveys. A national oversight committee of physicians and other health care professionals analyzes the team’s findings and assigns an accreditation level based on the performance of each plan being evaluated against NCQA’s standards. The standards are purposely set high to encourage health plans to adopt strategies that improve care, enhance service and control cost.
“NCQA Accreditation provides purchasers and consumers with an unprecedented ability to evaluate the quality of different health plans along a variety of important dimensions, and to make their health plan decisions based on demonstrated value rather than simply on cost,” said Judy Slagle, Consumers’ Choice senior vice president and chief operating officer. “We are very proud of this achievement.”
NCQA is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. NCQA accredits and certifies a wide range of health care organizations. It also recognizes clinicians and practices in key areas of performance. NCQA is committed to providing health care quality information for consumers, purchasers, health care providers and researchers.
“Consumers’ Choice Health Plan was among the first new plans in the nation to receive NCQA Interim Accreditation, said Julie Bateman, Director of Clinical Operations. This represents a companywide commitment to incorporate best practices and meet rigorous quality standards, which translates into reliable, consistent access to care and delivery of services to Consumers’ Choice membership.”
“Congratulations to our staff for earning what is considered the gold standard for health plans,” said Jerry Burgess, Consumers’ Choice president and chief executive officer. “Superior attention to detail and many, many hours of hard work went into the accreditation application and approval process.”
